Asheville Chapter – Position Statement

National Vision

Our Revolution will reclaim democracy for the working people of our country by harnessing the transformative energy of the “political revolution.” We will revitalize American democracy by unifying the millions of people who became involved over the course of U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign in support of progressive causes. Through fostering a new generation of inspired leaders, empowering millions to fight for commonsense change, and elevating the political consciousness, Our Revolution will transform American politics to make our political and economic systems once again responsive to the needs of working families.

Revitalize Democracy in NC

Voter turnout is at its lowest in years, and the rift between politicians and the working class is at its deepest. Our Revolution will work to return the Democratic Party to its roots as a party representing the needs of everyday people, rather than catering to the wealthy 1% and special interests. By organizing from the ground up, this grassroots presence will run commonsense candidates for office who can speak to the needs of the people and win elections.

We’ve already seen record precinct meeting turnout in Buncombe County, Western North Carolina, and throughout the state. This spike in participation at the grassroots level–thanks in part to the work of Our Revolution–is the first step towards returning the party to its roots as a party of the working class. With hundreds of precinct chairs and county chairs representing these ideals, change is happening.

County and district conventions are coming up, and 2018 midterms are around the corner. It is time to make our needs heard, create change that people believe in,–and give the working class a reason to turn out at the polls. In addition to encouraging direct involvement with the party through precinct meetings and conventions, we will also work to mobilize canvassing efforts aimed at engaging our neighbors and communities in the political process, ensuring that they feel their needs and concerns are being heard.

Through the incorporation of new voices into the structure of the Democratic Party, we will reach new voters in a wider range of communities. Together, we will rebuild trust in the Democratic Party.

Building Local Leadership – Precincts

It’s already happening in other states, and now it’s time to make it happen here in North Carolina! All power in the Democratic Party derives from your precinct, which is a given area of citizens grouped by voting location. We’re here to help catalyze people to become involved in their precinct, encourage those interested to take on a leadership position, and reshape our party from the ground up by working together!

The NC Democratic Party is organized hierarchically into 4 different levels: state, district, county, and precinct. Everything starts at the local precinct level. By attending your precinct “reorganization meeting” (essentially, a meeting of registered Democrats in your neighborhood where precinct officers and delegates are elected), you can subsequently attend the county convention, as well as potentially the district and state conventions.

Elevating NC Political Consciousness

Our Revolution will educate the public about the most pressing issues confronting our nation and North Carolina, offering bold solutions that address these problems. You can help write and pass resolutions which can then become part of our state platform, and eventually the DNC platform–resolutions like a $15 minimum wage, a demand for single payer universal health care, an end to for-profit prisons, a carbon tax to dramatically slow climate change, and more.

But in order to do this, we need to rebuild a foundation of trust by reaching as many people as possible to make sure they feel like the Democratic Party is one they actually feel represented by. We need to energize our precincts and meet regularly within our neighborhoods. We need to knock on doors, talk with our neighbors, and grow stronger as a community.

We need to continually hold present representatives accountable on all levels by asking them publicly to state positions and answer questions, using the avenues of local media, social media, and public forums. We will work with like-minded organizations to identify top priorities including:

  • Affordable Healthcare
  • Affordable Housing
  • Climate Control
  • LGBT Equality
  • Immigration
  • Income Equality
  • Quality Education
  • Racial Justice
  • Women’s Rights
